When the flying mammals use echolocation, humans are only sometimes able to make out very quiet clicks. Slowed down, the clicks are actually chirping with a distinct tonal progression.  Though bat sounds are nearly impossible to hear outdoors, the noises of echolocation can be detected inside insulated homes. Additionally, residents may hear scratching and flapping sounds made by bats trapped inside attics or other areas of the home.  They like to roost in groups, and their ability to fly allows them to gather in attics, chimneys, barns, and sheds. Since these spaces offer protection from the elements and access to insects, infestations are common.  Often the first sign of bats in the house is an unpleasant odor from the accumulation of bat guano.  The bats can be difficult to spot at first. If you concentrate towards the left of the screen, you can spot them. You usually cannot hear a single bat, but in colonies this size in an enclosed space, you can hear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crittercontrol.com\/wildlife\/bats\/bat-noises\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.crittercontrol.com\/wildlife\/bats\/bat-noises\/\">bat noises in the attic<\/a>. Like most mammals, bats have vocalizations to communicate. These vocalizations typically sound like squeaking or chittering sounds. You can hear these sounds at dusk or dawn when bats are most active.
